Since 1993, OBV SCABRIC has been working to improve water and soil quality in Châteauguay watersheds. The OBV territory extends from the U.S. border in the south to the city of Longueuil in the north. It borders the St. Lawrence River to the west and the municipalities of Hemmingford, Saint-Jacques-le-Mineur and Napierville to the east. The SCABRIC OBV bases its actions on its Water Master Plan, a document required by the Ministère de l’Environnement, de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques, de la Faune et des Parcs.
The prioritized actions are as follows:
– Ensure access to sufficient quantities of high-quality drinking water;
– Regaining the use of bathing ;
– Maintain biodiversity in the region’s healthy waterways;
– Apply water regulations transparently throughout the Châteauguay area.
With this in mind, OBV SCABRIC organized four information days for local farmers during December 2024 and January 2025. These awareness days were organized in partnership with the French Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. They were held in Saint-Stanislas-de-Kostka and Saint-Constant. The aim of these meetings was to raise farmers’ awareness of agri-environmental practices. The aim of these practices is to protect soils from problems such as erosion, reduce the use of chemical agricultural products and protect water sources close to fields. Just over fifty participants benefited from the expertise of the OBV and guest speakers. These days are a success for the organization, and help us get 2025 off on the right foot!
