In agricultural settings, the application of fertilizers, pesticides, manure or fertilizing residual materials can, in certain situations, compromise groundwater quality. When these contaminants are left on the soil surface near a well, they can be transported by rainwater or melting snow, infiltrating the soil.
The risk of contamination of drinking water is higher when these substances are spread near a well, since bacteria, viruses and chemicals won’t have time to degrade before reaching the well.
The « Vos puits sont-ils à l’abri? » project took place in the fall of 2013. It aimed to raise awareness and equip farmers to better protect their drinking water by avoiding spreading substances near their wells.
OBV SCABRIC employees visited farms, homes and businesses in the Saint-Chrysostome agricultural community to raise awareness and locate wells.
