J’adopte un cours d’eau

Monitoring rivers, adapting for the future

What is it?

Since 2004, the SCABRIC OBV has been helping students and teachers discover the region’s waterways as part of the J’adopte un cours d’eau educational program. This project is part of a Canada-wide approach coordinated by the Groupe d’éducation et d’écosurveillance de l’eau (G3E). During a field trip, the participants collect physicochemical and bacteriological data, as well as benthic macroinvertebrates (insects, crustaceans, molluscs and worms living on the river bed).

Using this data, the participants can then determine the state of health of the watercourse under study. The field trip is preceded by classroom workshops to familiarize students with data collection protocols and a variety of concepts around watercourses. By carrying out the program on an annual basis, the school can monitor the evolution of their watercourse, which is particularly interesting in the context of climate change!

What do we do?

Since 2004, the OBV SCABRIC has worked with a dozen schools to implement the program. Currently, we’ve been running the program with Arthur-Pigeon high school in Huntingdon since 2006 and Collège Héritage in Châteauguay since 2023.

To view the results for each school, click on Data, then Macroinvertebrates and Identification to order – J’adopte un cours d’eau. Zoom in on Huntingdon and/or Châteauguay.

OBV SCABRIC is responsible for:
  • Training teachers and supervisors;
  • Preparing and leading preparatory workshops and the final workshop;
  • Assisting the class on field trips and with data entry and interpretation.
