Reducing overflows: where do municipalities in our zone stand in 2023?

The management of wastewater is a crucial environmental issue for protecting our waterways and ensuring the quality of life in our communities. Unfortunately, many municipalities in the OBV SCABRIC area face major challenges in reducing overflows on their territory.

These overflows, caused by the overflowing of sewer systems during heavy rains or periods of thaw, result in the direct discharge of untreated wastewater into rivers and other aquatic environments. This phenomenon has harmful repercussions on the health of our ecosystems, biodiversity, and sometimes even on public safety.

To better understand where municipalities stand on this issue, the Fondation Rivières recently published its 2023 ranking. This ranking assesses the performance of municipalities in terms of overflow management, and highlights those that need to redouble their efforts to improve the situation.

The ranking is a valuable source of information for raising awareness among elected officials, citizens and regional stakeholders of the urgent need for action. It also recognizes municipalities that stand out for their efforts to reduce the impact of overflows and improve their infrastructures.

We would like to highlight the excellent work accomplished by the Municipality of Saint-Stanislas-de-Kostka, which has succeeded in improving its situation thanks to sustained efforts and strategic investments.
