Assistance in drafting municipal drinking water source protection plans (PEPPSEP - 2024)
What is it?
After conducting vulnerability analyses of drinking water intakes, those responsible for water withdrawal are invited to draw up a drinking water source protection plan. The purpose of drawing up a protection plan is to define and plan the implementation of measures to mitigate the threats identified, to preserve or even improve the quantity or quality of the water used.
What do we do?
In collaboration with the Haut-Saint-Laurent ZIP Committee, OBV SCABRIC offers support to eligible and interested municipalities (RPEP Category 1). This support includes defining expectations and approaches, identifying priorities, coordinating concerted action, sharing existing data relevant to the process, internal and external communications, and reviewing and implementing work plans.
OBV SCABRIC is responsible for:
- Initiating projects, establishing relationships and collecting data;
- Identifying threats to be prioritized;
- Producing updated maps of threats and protection areas;
- Identifying protection measures already in place, determining those to be implemented and selecting success indicators;
- Defining the monitoring structure and timetable for implementation of the source water protection plan.
Overview and history
Protection plans are drawn up following vulnerability analysis reports. Joint service offers with the Haut-Saint-Laurent ZIP committee and certain hydrogeologists have made it possible to complete 7 vulnerability analyses on the territory in 2021.
The OBV SCABRIC is the holder of these joint service offers with the Comité ZIP du Haut-Saint-Laurent. Several municipalities and towns in the region are actively involved in preparing their first version of a Drinking Water Supply Source Protection Plan.
